Eyeless In Gaza: Answer Song & Dance (awarded 4 stars)

English post-punk survivors set out stall

Martyn Bates and Peter Becker’s duo has outlived most of their post-punk peers with no loss of integrity. This comp – one third of which is unreleased tracks – takes stock of the group’s current sound, which has toughened itself up of late. On “Wildcat Fights” and the instrumental “The 3-D Picture” Becker’s massed electric guitars jangle and crackle with shrill energy, while the banjo-driven “Reedsong” is couched in the English folk idiom Bates has explored since the 90’s. The assured setting of Simon Armitage’s poem “The Keep”, and the dabble in dub on “Long Calling Summer” testify to this group’s continued versatility.

eternal wave

by Paolo Bertoni (Blow Up # 143, April 2010)

A Map of the Stars In Summer. Answer Song & Dance

by Norbert Schiegl (musikwoche.de, February 2, 2010)
